Burundi

Our first ever container of tools to Burundi was sent in 2025. Since it arrived in August, progress in Burundi has been steady. Groups have begun unpacking tools, setting up workshops, and taking their first steps toward new livelihoods.
We also received an inspiring update from a local supporter who helped very small community organisations apply. Their commitment shows the strong grassroots interest in TWAM's work.
As a new programme still in its early stages, Burundi is showing real potential. Our focus for 2026 will be to strengthen partnerships, improve follow-up, and support communities as they turn these tools into lasting opportunities. As the TWAM Burundi team says, "today we stop explaining and start building to lift lives up."

Story - Container 'Glyn'
Named in honour of a long-serving TWAM volunteer, Container Glyn left the UK in March. It was bound for Burundi, TWAM's first ever shipment of tools to that country.
After several months at sea, it safely arrived in Karusi Province, Burundi, and was handed over to our trusted local partner - the Herridge Technical School.
The response was one of surprised delight. Until then, the idea of receiving good-quality toolkits from a distant country seemed too good to be true. A student at the Herridge School put it well: "People kept telling us 'Be careful; this might be a scam.' But now we have the tools in our hands. We are ready to start."
Apply for tools
We do not charge for specific tools or tool kits, but we do ask that you contribute a small amount towards the UK cost of collecting, refurbishing and packing the tools we send to Africa.
The Online Application form below will show you the cost of the tools you are applying for. Before completing your application, please think about the cost and whether you can afford it. If you cannot, please reduce the number of tools you are applying for at this time to a cost you can afford. You can apply again another time for more tools. By applying for less tools rather than waiting to raise a larger amount, you will not have to wait so long for the delivery of the tools you need.
What you need to know:
We will let you know that we have received your application.
You will then receive a phone call from our Zambia team to assess your application.
Following this we will tell you whether or not your application is successful.
We will then tell you when your tools will arrive, and where to collect them from.
After you have had your tools for one year, we will carry out an assessment to make sure you are using your tools as you agreed in your application.
